Alumna Takes Stage in Local Shakespeare Production

Nationally recognized Shakespearean performer Anna Sheehan '21 continues to perform after seven years of Shakespeare at Montrose.
The Montrose graduate and 2021 Silver medalist in the English Speaking Union's National Shakespeare Competition performs A Midsummer Night's Dream this weekend with the Gazebo Players of Medfield at Bird Park in Walpole. Find details here.

Anna credits Montrose for her award-winning ability to interpret Shakespeare on stage. "My high school teachers urged me to dig deeper in a text, to clarify my thinking, and, beyond the classroom, to empathize with and reach out to other people. It’s the others-centered attitude that Montrose fosters that allows me to understand people a little bit better, and when your environment leads you to understand people, there’s no limit to what you can uncover in a monologue, in a scene, or in the richest verse of Shakespeare."

At Montrose, every student reads at least one work by William Shakespeare each year. “The themes that Shakespeare develops force us to consider the essential questions, the ones that help us understand ourselves and others,” said Upper School Director Barbara Whitlock. The focus on core texts and the in-depth academic approach at Montrose allows the time and space in the classroom for students at every grade level to consider these questions. “Reading Shakespeare and reflecting on the important questions he raises is a critical part of a liberal arts education,” explained Head of School Katie Elrod.
