Students are lauded for their scholarship, leadership, character and service.
Twenty-three Montrose students were inducted into the DeTore Chapter of the National Honor Society on Thursday, September 11. These girls, 22 juniors and one senior, were lauded for their scholarship, leadership, character and service in their first two years of high school.
Ms. Kate Cusack ’99 and Mrs. Sarah Harper, NHS faculty advisors, welcomed the girls and their parents to the evening ceremony. Ms. Cusack recognized the academic, service and leadership achievements of the 23 new members. “The combination of these attributes is what is needed to encourage the development of future leaders who have a strong moral compass and will make a positive difference in the world in which we live,” she noted.
Ms. Cusack described the many service projects which members of the DeTore Chapter of NHS have undertaken over the past year. These have ranged from making cards and gifts for military personnel and the homeless, to donating school supplies and clothes to children around the world, to tutoring fellow students.
Maddie Crump ’15, Katrin O’Grady ’15, Laura Bergemann ’15 and Emily Melville ’15, NHS officers, each lit a white candle representing one of the four attributes of NHS members: scholarship, leadership, character and service. These white candles were lit from a yellow candle, which represented the eternal light of knowledge.
Laura exhorted the new inductees to show their scholarship in action by helping their peers to learn. “We are all excited about what your mind and your heart, your knowledge and your compassion can do. We ask you tonight not only to continue this work, this spirit of scholarship and service, but to initiate, celebrate and participate in it.” Katrin reminded them of the important qualities of a leader. “We want to be examples of great big sisters; we want to be leaders even when no one else will know and we will get no credit for the leadership we showed. We want to be examples of girls with faith, character and vision.”
Each inductee received a membership pin from the officers, as well as a rose and a hug from one of the senior NHS members. The girls and their parents enjoyed a reception after the ceremony.
Congratulations to the newest members of the DeTore Chapter of the National Honor Society:
