A Spanish Immersion Opportunity

Trip to Spain offers students an opportunity to explore culture and language.
Four Montrosians took advantage of an opportunity to further develop their language skills on a ten-day cultural exploration of Barcelona and Madrid led by World Languages teacher Elizabeth Mahoney.

Margaret Sparicio '16, Catherine Conroy '16, Tyra Alexander '16 and Gabby Leonard '16 designed an immersion experience that would enhance their Spanish language skills and allow them the opportunity to experience Spanish culture for themselves.  The girls researched and then visited many sites, including Prado Museum, Sagrada Familia Cathedral and Monserrat.  Former Montrose international students and their families welcomed the girls into their homes in each city.

Reflecting on the experience, Margaret Sparicio ‘16 said, “Catherine, Gabby, Tyra and I had an amazing time in both Barcelona and Madrid. We were able to fully immerse ourselves in the culture and language, as we only spoke Spanish.”

Margaret added, “It was so exciting to see the exchange students and how their culture differs from ours here in Massachusetts. We visited world renowned attractions such as La Sagrada Familia and Parque Guell and, with the girls as our tour guides, we were able to experience some of the more hidden attractions only a native could suggest, such as where to find the best gelato.  We were extremely privileged to have this opportunity and it was a once in a lifetime experience."

Ms. Mahoney, who shared tour guide duties with the host families, observed that the personal connection with the host families also made an impact on the girls. “It was a terrific cultural learning experience for all, but the warm and welcoming Spanish people were the girls' favorite part of the trip,” she noted.
