Field Hockey Reflections

Seniors reflect on the growth of the Field Hockey program during their time at Montrose.
As they conclude their final fall season, seniors on the Varsity Field Hockey team reflected on the impressive growth of the program. Samantha Bowman ’16, Elizabeth O'Neil ’16, Margaret Sparicio ’16, Meagan Albertson ’16, Clara Cahill Farella ’16, Ally O'Connell ’16 and Rachel Solomon ’16 leave behind a well-established team that was founded their 6th grade year.

Meagan and Ally were part of the junior varsity team that began when they started at Montrose as 6th grade students. “We used to have to run to McCarthy Field with Ms. Pennington, our coach at the time, following along in her Jeep,” Meagan recalled.  “We didn’t have sticks or uniforms and we worked on very basic skills.”

By this year, the team routinely took on much bigger, well established programs and held their own. “Playing against teams such as Newton Country Day was such a good experience,” agreed Margaret, who joined the team in 7th grade when she came to Montrose.  “We held our own.” Rachel pointed out that the field hockey program has given the girls a different outlet for “determination and hard work.”  “We had the opportunity to show these traits physically and mentally, which rounds out our classroom experiences,” she noted.

The tight-knit group of girls forged a close bond as a team.  “We are a small group, so we enjoyed team dinners with girls, not only from our class, but from the other grades, too,” added Rachel. “It is a good opportunity to see a different side of people, including the coach.”

Ally thinks the future looks bright for Montrose’s field hockey program, pointing to the interest that the Summer Program’s field hockey offering has sparked among younger girls at Montrose and from surrounding towns.  “I hope the younger girls will continue to work hard and keep moving the program forward,” she said. “I hope they realize just how far we have come.”

The seniors on the team all hope to continue to play field hockey in college, even if only on club teams.  Some even have aspirations for the continued growth of field hockey at Montrose.  “I would love to come back and coach the team someday,” said Ally.
