The Mavericks finish strong seasons in soccer, field hockey, cross country and golf.
The Montrose fall sports teams finished with strong seasons, as the soccer, cross country, field hockey and new golf teams celebrated their success at the Fall Sports Awards Night.
The Varsity Soccer team played their most difficult schedule yet in 2013, finishing 7-4-1 and progressing to the NEPSAC tournament. The Mavericks decisively beat Waring School in the first round of the tournament, but fell to Chase Collegiate in the semi-finals to end the season. “It was a fantastic final game, even though the best team did not win,” said coach Amy Aha. “My team played with so much heart, talent and skill. I am bursting with pride!”
The Varsity Soccer team could not attend the Fall Sports Awards Night due to the tournament, but the other fall team came together with coaches, parents and school administrators to celebrate their seasons. The JV Soccer team notched a winning season of 6-4-0. Coach Abby Milton awarded the Unsung Hero Award to Sophia Conte ’19, the 110% Award to Julia Convery ’19, the Most Improved Player Award to Gabby Leonard ’16 and the MVP to Bridget Baker ’18.
The Cross Country team also had a strong year, with Katrin O’Grady ’15 again being selected by NEPSTA to compete in the All-Star Meet. “This is my fourth year coaching Cross Country, and this team goes farther every year,” said coach Becky Nielson. Katrin received the MVP Award, while Monica Fernandez ’14 received the Unsung Hero Award, Kelsey Gallagher ’14 received the 110% Award and Mackenzie Young ’16 received the Most Improved Player Award.
Coach Lettie Trespasz of the Varsity Golf team commended the players on her new team. “These girls came so far in a short period of time. I saw golf swings from them that I ached to own!”
“The energy and commitment of this team is amazing,” said coach Heather MacLeod of her Varsity Field Hockey team. “I love coaching them!” The team finished its second season at 1-6-2, playing a difficult schedule against very experienced teams. Coach MacLeod awarded the Unsung Hero Award to Emily Melville ’15, the 110% Award to Katie Fair ’14, the Most Improved Player Award to Samantha Bowman ’16 and the MVP to Monica Stack ’15.
JV Field Hockey coach Mary Kay Sparicio also praised her team members after an outstanding season in which they finished 7-1-1. “Girls who had never played field hockey worked hard to learn the game. I would hear ‘Thank you, Mrs. Sparicio’ from players after I corrected them. Girls would come off the field in a game and ask, ‘What can I do better?” She presented the Unsung Hero Award to goalie Molly Bowman ’18, the 110% Award to Regina Crevier ’18, the Most Improved Player Award to Molly Morgan ’20 and the MVP Award to Sophia Sardegna ’18.
Head of School Dr. Karen Bohlin commended the girls for the character they showed this fall in their athletic efforts. She also thanked the coaches, noting “ these role models help girls be their best possible selves every day,” and praised the efforts of Athletic Director Mrs. Jodi Blackburn, calling her “a leader who advocates for our athletes.”
