Excitement and engagement are integral components of the Montrose science curriculum.
Students broaden their engagement with scientific concepts through innovative opportunities and a strong curriculum.
In science class, department coordinator Monica Baker often shares short videos with her students from "Professor Dave," host of the popular "Professor Dave Explains" YouTube channel with more than 2.5 million subscribers. Inspired by Professor Dave's clear explanations of difficult concepts, Katie Ryan '25 reached out to Professor Dave and invited him to visit her 10th grade chemistry class.
"The girls loved the opportunity to speak to Professor Dave in person," said Mrs. Baker. "They showed great intellectual curiosity and asked him many questions about chemistry concepts."
In another unique opportunity, Mrs. Baker and school biologist Sarah Hanna invited two chemistry post-doc students from MIT to visit several classes. The post-docs led creative hands-on labs and spoke with students about a career in chemistry. "It was such a fun immersive experience," said Elena Schuster '27.
Montrose teachers know experiential learning is critical to igniting students’ interest in science. “At Montrose the focus is on labs and hands-on activities for active learning in the classroom,” said Mrs. Baker.

"We've widened the pathways to deeper understanding and academic rigor in high school science, to allow more students an earlier opportunity to challenge themselves and meet meaningful academic goals," said Associate Head of School Mary Jo White. Upper school students can choose from a variety of challenging science classes beginning in 9th grade, including AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Physics 1 and AP Physics C.
Upper school students can also partake of the School's award-winning AP Computer Science offerings: AP Computer Science Principles and AP Computer Science A.
